MMA Video Tip: Shin Kicking

A shin kicking is a painful kickboxing move to use. This video on shin kick breaks down the difference between a traditional Karate roundhouse kick and an MMA shin kick.

In a traditional Karate round kick, the body rotates and uses the large muscle on the back of the leg for a snapping kick. It’s an effective strike but mechanically has a slightly different motion and purpose than a shin kick.

A shin kick lifts the knee to the apex, and then drops down on a diagonal path and into the opponent’s leg. The body fully rotates forward and through causing as much damage as possible to the leg. This is a technique that will need considerable practice with a partner.
