MMA Tip: Cage Up
This blocking drill is sometimes called “cage up”. It’s an effective and often an emergency tactic that allows you take a chance to refocus.
For those who have taken a punch in a fight or in a competition and have experienced that dizzy, cloudy feeling, you know what it’s like to be stung and how it takes a few seconds to get your bearings back. The last thing you want to do is drop your hands or to start swinging wildly.
By caging up, you are bringing both arms up, palms to your forehead and then bracing your arms in order to form a basic “cage” around your head. This will take a lot of the blunt force off of your head and might help give you a change to regain your focus and then escape or counter attack.
